Rapha Travel Trips – How difficult are they?

How difficult are they?

As the old adage goes, it doesn’t get any easier, you just go faster. That said, some of our trips are longer and more physically demanding than others. We’ve rated them on a scale of 1 to 4:

▲△△△ Moderato
▲▲△△ Allegretto
▲▲▲△ Allegro
▲▲▲▲ Ultimo

However, as all riders know, when you’re on the road ascending a col, sometimes 90% of the battle is against yourself and your own limitations. We’ll give all riders the support they need to achieve things they might not have thought possible.

All our trips are physically demanding, but some are harder than others. Grandes Randonnées and Cent Cols Challenges are among the toughest, and Retreats are among the most relaxing.

Our guides, soigneurs and mechanics will support every rider to go beyond their usual level of riding.

Each individual trip is rated for difficulty as seen above, and each trip type page gives rough guidelines on who the trip is for, to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Rapha Randonnées are a real challenge, often climbing the same cols used in the biggest races in the world. But because they’re fully supported, they can be enjoyed by everyone from veteran riders with years of experience to relative newcomers who have put in the training and committed themselves to achieving something special. On a Grande Randonnée, expect longer days, more technical climbs and descents and terrain that is more mixed. Read more »

Raids suit a confident and athletic rider, or groups of friends who may already have done a multi-day trip and prefer to have a more straightforward approach to support. Our amazing staff will always be available and by your side, but at the same time a Raid encourages independence and the ability for riders to challenge themselves further. Read more »

Retreats suit all types of riders, except for those who want packed days and relentless riding. Although you will have the chance to do big days in the saddle and test yourself on amazing roads, your time can be as demanding or as gentle as you like: wine tastings, market trips, swimming and massages are examples of indulgences that are positively encouraged. You’ll return home fitter and happier, and recharged in mind and body. Read more »

Ascents showcase some of cycling’s most testing battlegrounds, which are feared even by elite athletes. However, because the trips are based in one location and are shorter in duration, Ascents are suitable for a wide range of riders, including those relatively new to road cycling who are willing to put in the training beforehand. Whether you want bragging rights over your friends, or to conquer one of the biggest names in the sport, you’ll return home with a major sense of achievement and a boost to your appreciation of cycling. Pro Team Camps are for committed riders looking for proper, hard training miles, and particularly suit groups of clubmates or friends working towards similar goals, who can spur each other on to the next level. Read more »

Cent Cols Challenges are for the strongest and most experienced riders, because of the distances and the huge physical and psychological challenge involved. On most days riders should expect at least 8-10 hours in the saddle, and to be self-sufficient for long periods of time. The remoteness of the terrain also means that accommodation and food are less luxurious than Rapha’s other trips. However, Phil Deeker and the Rapha team of guides, mechanics and soigneurs take care of all logistics and everything riders need, letting you focus your mind, and legs, on the cols. It is usual that some riders don’t complete the parcours. But, thanks to the stunning settings and the camaraderie, and possibly to reserves they didn’t know they had, riders often find they rise to the demands of the trip and take their riding to a new level.
