Ian Stannard and the Ghent Hustle

Ian Stannard tells the story of how he beat the odds to take a masterful win – his second in a row – at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in February 2015.

“After my injury the previous year [Ian fractured his vertebrae in 2014], I guess my feeling was one of ‘let’s see where I’m at and see what happens’. The guys looked after me well during the race and I was there at the end.

It was nice to beat Tom [Boonen] – he’s always been a rider I’ve looked up to since I was younger, watching him on TV. Having the opportunity to beat him like that was pretty cool.

I thought I had no chance when I saw that it was three Etixx-Quickstep riders and me in the break. I thought maybe I could get second place at best, I never thought I could win it from that situation.

They didn’t even ask me for a turn, just rode their guts out, which worked out pretty well for me! I think they thought they had superiority with the numbers but went overboard with it. It kind of played into my hands as they ended up flicking each other as well.

The two Omloops are the best wins I’ve got – well, they’re pretty much the only ones!”
