V&A no.3 – The Garden

Name: Corinna Gardner

Role at V&A:
Curator of Contemporary Product Design

I’m standing in the John Madejski Garden in front of what was once the main entrance to the V&A Museum. Opened to the public in 1865, the doors, just seen in the background, show historic figures representative of the arts and sciences, including Astronomy (Newton), Mechanics (Watt), Sculpture (Michelangelo) and Painting (Titian). The doors represent the then ambition of the museum to unite the arts and sciences and they, alongside the extensive facade decoration, proclaim the museum’s commitment to cultural education through the visual arts.
