Rapha’s guide to staying dry

Preparation is the best solution to riding in the rain. Wet bodies lose heat faster than they dry, and cold bodies don’t work efficiently. Follow our guide to cover up for whatever the weather can muster.

What to wear

Rapha’s wet weather products combine the three principles above, without sacrificing on streamlined performance. Take a look at our key items for staying dry – and fast.

SHADOW

Shadow was made for riding in bad weather. Waterproof, windproof and highly breathable, it was developed when elite riders asked for kit that could be worn in the worst weather. Made possible by a pioneering fabric, Rapha Shadow offers cyclists performance, protection and comfort in a lightweight single layer. The rain beads off, the wind is kept out and excess heat escapes, keeping you comfortable in changeable conditions.

Rapha waterproof technology is rigorously tested for months during product development to ensure maximum performance.

Protection

The individual yarns in Shadow fabric are treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) before weaving. The fabric is dyed at high temperature, tightening the weave further, then it’s treated with another DWR. This makes it extremely water resistant, as well as windproof and highly breathable.

Comfort

It’s rare that a waterproof is also breathable. Usually, they’re made of two or more laminated plies bonded together, which means heat and sweat can build up. Shadow is a single layer of densely-woven fabric, making it much more breathable, letting excess heat and keeping you comfortable.

Fabric

Since the 1970s, the outdoor industry’s foul-weather garments have largely focused on laminate technology. A water-resistant fabric and a more breathable membrane are sandwiched together for a best-of-both solution. Shadow, with its single ply, revolutionises this approach.

Rapha Pro Team Shadow

Highly breathable, wet-weather protection in a race-fit lightweight layer.

Pro Team Shadow is a racewear proposition for foul weather, developed with, and worn at the Classics by, Team Sky after they asked for a breathable garment to wear for entire races in changeable conditions. Made possible by a pioneering stretch-woven fabric, the Shadow Jersey and Bib Shorts offer the ‘triple crown’: performance, protection and comfort in a lightweight single layer. The rain beads off, the wind is kept out and excess heat escapes.

"Rapha has discovered the Holy Grail in cycle kit - something totally and comprehensively water resistant that doesn’t boil you from the inside out.”

– 4/5. The Times

“Shadow performs superbly. The fabric is thinner and lighter than that used in the Castelli Gabba, but impressively offers comparable wind-proofing. Water repellency is superb and the best I have seen on garments of this type.”

“It’s amazing that we can race while wearing a piece of kit like the Shadow Jersey. It protects you from all of the worst weather like a jacket but is also as comfy and aerodynamic as a regular jersey.”
