Base Layer Collection 2014

Words: | Date:

Every ride should start with a good base layer.

Much as you need to eat a decent meal before a long ride, a base layer lays the foundation for the body’s efficient use of heat. If you want to freshen up your riding wardrobe, the perfect starting point is to grab a few new base layers, versatile garments that will serve you now and throughout the year. Rapha’s base layer collection offers options for every kind of ride and climate, from the natural performance and comfort of merino wool, to proprietary man-made fibres for quick wicking. Here’s a guide to layering up this season.

Merino Base Layer

Merino Base Layer

The original and still (arguably) the best, this classic design with flatlock stitching and raglan sleeves work admirably in various temperatures. If you’re unsure which layer is for you, choose this one. It can be used as a T-shirt, mid-layer and performs superbly in the transition months from winter to spring and autumn to winter. With the right jersey, this is always a top performer.

Merino Vest

Merino Vest Base Layer

This new style uses the same weight merino fabric as the classic Merino Base Layer but has a cut for summer city riding and for layering under more off-the-bike attire like shirts, T-shirts and polos. The lack of sleeves allows for better heat dissipation in the summer months, and allows for better compatibility with tailored or tight-fitting shirts and jerseys.

Women’s Base Layer

Women’s Base Layer

The Women’s Base Layer styles come in a new vest cut, alongside a short sleeved and long sleeved V-neck style. Both use the finer 18.9 micron weight of merino which is superbly soft, light and extremely breathable. Again, versatility is the major win when you purchase these beautiful products. Can be used on and off the bike and will work when layering with a single jersey or more layers in colder temperatures.

V-Neck

V is for versatile. The great thing about this merino layer is that you can race in it, commute in it or drive to the coast in it. Designed primarily for use by riders in the city with shirts and T-shirts, it was soon discovered that the finer weight merino it’s cut from is great for summer riding and racing in full summer kit.

Caring for your Rapha Base Layers

Merino Wash

Rapha produce a specially formulate Merino Wash for all merino products. If you take particular care when washing merino base layers, they should last for years and maintain their structure and softness. If you’re not using our Merino wash please ensure your detergent is non-biological.

Rapha’s merino layers are machine washable but, if you can, hand washing in 30°C water is preferable. Drying them naturally as flat as possible also helps to care for them.

The way you store merino products is also important. The best way is to fold them rather than hang, ensuring they are completely dry. As all wool is susceptible to moths, when you store your merino away ensure it’s a clean, dry place and use moth deterrents like lavender, cedar wood or a man-made formula.
