Ryan Thomson

Date:

What’s your name, nickname, age, birthplace, hometown?
Ryan Thomson | Evil | 39 | Klamath Falls, Oregon | Currently residing in the plush SoTa neighborhood in Portland, Oregon

Favorite phenomenon?
Did they make a sequel? I never liked John Travolta in that role…

How do you like to tell stories?
I let other people tell stories about me because I’m awkward…

Pivotal moments in life?
Learning to read… choosing to run x-country instead of baseball in highschool… seeing the Tour de France in real life for the first time in ’98… (le ans dopage!) living and working in Brasil…

Why/how did you start riding?
Like as a kid? I rode to get to the city swimming pool 13 miles away during summer vacations…I started riding after seeing the 1983 Coors Classic on TV.

Family life, or home life; kids, wife, girlfriend, pets?
I have some of those, yes.

What’s your special talent/gift to the world?
I can spend money like nobody’s business. I can also fix broken things.

What’s the continental project mean to you?
Exploration. Of physical limits. Of locations unknown to me. Of fun. Of pain. Of friendships.

Why are you interested in documenting rides?
Because I like to stretch a 6 hour day into 9 hours? Kidding… giving this a human edge will hopefully bring more folks into the fold.

What do you want a riding guidebook to feature (what’s missing from what currently exists out there), and how will you contribute to that end goal?
On the rare occasions i use a guidebook, i would want removable, pocket-sized maps and que sheets that will survive moisture, salt, icy cokes, nasty cheese sandwiches, and the occasional dip in a river.

What’s style mean to you?
That’s a tough one… to me it means nice shoes and matching belt. Respecting trends without being trendy. Not spilling over. Not being sloppy. Paying attention to details, but not having too many details.

Who’s your favorite local rider and why?
Why narrow it to one? Portland is teeming with favorites. commuters, racers, homeless, affluent weekend warriors, fixsters, young, old.

Where in the world would you like to ride next and why or what group ride if you could do any would you do?
Damn, there are sooo many places i would like to ride… but for sure, i would like to ride Alpe d’Heuz, Col du Galibier and Ventoux, so that as an old man, sitting in my comfy chair, for decades to come, i will know, if even a fraction there of, what those guys are going through.

You need anyone reading this to know…?
Yes, my hamstrings are actually that tight… and yes, i do go to yoga.

Why cycling and not, running or shot put or speed skating?
I can’t afford running shoes.

Your favorite ride/moment ever, just the details?
Tony P. nose wheeling down the washboards, gravel and dirt descent on the LoLo pass ride… at 40mph… and then glancing back and smiling at me…

What’s your job all about, why does it fit you?
I am an industrial designer/3D animator/still image renderer in the architecture field. it is art and design and dork, all in one.

What’s your program, like who and what and where is your world?
Holy shit, i don’t get asked questions like that from my shrink…

Where you live and why it suits you?
I live in a house, because it rains a lot in portland, which suits me just fine.
