Cycle Club London: Spring 2014

After four weeks in which the walls were pushed back, the menu given a redesign, and the décor refreshed, the Rapha Cycle Club London is now back, a hub for the best rides, racing, food, coffee, and cycling clothing in London.

The new menu was developed by consulting chef Henrik Orre with the demands of riding in mind, and is divided into pre-ride, post-ride, and on-the-bike offerings, along with fresh pastries and treats from Fabrique bakery. Henrik looked to the culture of cycling for inspiration, resulting in dishes such as Roubaix mushroom soup, which uses a mimolette cheese sourced from the Roubaix region and is served with a ‘pavé’ of Levain toast. The selection of practical on-the-bike snacks all have a foil wrapping designed for easy removal, and includes handmade granola bars and rice cakes, as used by Team Sky during racing and training. See below for a pdf of the new menu.

There’s a full slate of live racing and highlights this spring, with more big screens and twice as many seats from which to enjoy it. All those seats were taken for Ian Stannard’s embattled victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

The club’s expert baristas are working with roasts from London’s Workshop Coffee, and an expanded wine list features wines sourced from vineyards that dot the routes of the season’s biggest races and Rapha Travel’s growing roster of trips. The club’s eclectic and changing decorations include a 2014 edition Team Sky Pinarello Dogma and a bike from the original Rapha Continental, built by expert frame builder Tony Pereira.

As always, riding is at the heart of everything the club does. The Wednesday evening women’s ride meets at 18.30 (rolling out at 19.00), is lead by two Rapha women riders, and is designed to be a ride at ‘conversational’ pace with a couple of opportunities to put in bigger efforts. The ride returns to the club for coffee and cake. Other rides include the regular Thursday morning laps of either Richmond or Regent’s Park, finishing with a free filter coffee at the club, and the ever-popular Saturday ride. Check @raphacycleclub for sign-up sheets and updates.

With the arrival of the latest City collection, and the Pro Team collection due in the coming weeks, the Cycle Club London is the perfect place to see, sample and buy Rapha products. The club’s staff is on hand to answer any questions about fit and performance.

The club’s official relaunch party took place on Thursday 20th February, where Henrik was on hand to showcase bite-size adaptations of the menu and explain the ideas behind his creations. Abigail Schade from Corney & Barrow also mingled with guests, talking through the new wine offering available in the Club. Guests included former pros, customers, Rapha staff, frame builders, and members of the press. After a wet winter, all were happy to have the refurbished Club as a base for the spring.

Since the launch party, the Rapha Cycle Club London has been going full gas. With the Classics season underway in Europe, we look forward to welcoming even more road racing fans to Brewer Street.
