500km, thousands of stories

24th - 31st December

Some festive traditions have been around for generations, and some have appeared ready-formed in more recent times. The Festive 500 is a perfect example of the latter - and this year’s edition is set to be a blockbuster, with more riders, more riding, and more ways to share your stories than ever before.

The first Festive 500 is already shrouded in folklore. Rapha’s Graeme Raeburn rode 1000km in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, combining extensive product testing, base miles, and a trip to see his family into one taxing adventure. In 2010, we invited friends and customers to match (half of) Graeme’s feat, and a festive tradition was born.

Every year since, we’ve been taken aback by the tales that roll in to Imperial Works when the challenge wraps up. Awards are given to stories in three categories - Most Inclement, Best Story, Prix de la Combativité, Best Photography, and a Grand Prize for Creativity – and in past years we’ve seen submissions in the form of photojournals, hand-bound illustrated pamphlets, videos, postcards, and the old favourite, email. This year’s Grand Prize is a frame by Rapha Continental builder and rider, Ricky Feather. The tig-welded frame will be constructed from Reynolds 853 and come with a Rapha Continental paint scheme and mudguard mounts. Deadline for submissions is January 31st.

All finishers of the Festive 500 may claim a limited edition roundel to mark their achievement. Riders must include a link to their Festive 500 stories or rides as proof of completion – this could be a Strava profile URL, Twitter and Instagram posts, or even photos of a training log.

    Words: Ed Middleton | Date:

The fifth year of the Festive 500 saw more riders than ever rising to the challenge of riding 500km on the eight days between 24-31 December. Over 8,000 cyclists successfully completed the challenge and claimed their roundels – proof that cycling achievement lies more in the legs than in the pudding. Many pushed their own limits to ride further than they’d ridden before in an eight day period, while others simply took the opportunity of some time away from work to end the year on a cycling high.

  2. Festive 500 2014 Roundup

    Words: | Date:

The fifth annual Festive 500 was billed as a “blockbuster”, and it certainly lived up to such fanfare: a snowflake-studded journey of self-sufficiency, immovable optimism, thousands of heavy legs and an all-conquering Yuletide…

  3. Festive 500 2011 – The Winners

    Words: | Date:

The voting is over and we can now reveal our winners of the 2011 Festive 500. It was a remarkable event, with the cumulative kilometres of all riders reaching somewhere close to 1.5m. Not only did we see a lot of distance covered but the volume and quality of the films, photography, illustrations, and writing (and even music) astounded us.
