Bellissimo!

Cycling photographer Russ Ellis has just spent three weeks at the Giro d’Italia, capturing the race in his own inimitable style. Below, he presents his favourite photos for us.

What a month!

I’ve covered a number of stages at Le Tour over the last three years but this was my first ever Giro and my first time covering all 21 stages of a Grand Tour.

Here are my 21 favourite photos, a mix of race imagery and shots of the passionate Italian fans who lined the roads from Sardinia to Milan. Most of these photographs were taken while hanging out of a car window!

I hope you enjoy the pictures – amore infinito!

Russ.

The race began on beautiful Sardinia. The island is famous for having residents that live to over 100 years old! Apt for the 100th edition of the race, I thought...

The ITT is a lonely place. So is shooting it!

These guys had the best (or at least, the most comfortable) seats in the house for the first ITT. Tom Dumoulin was imperious.

Jan Polanc poleaxed the break to emerge first at the top of Mount Etna.

Everyone wants to be near the stage winner, Colombian phenomenon Fernando Gaviria.

Team Katusha’s number one fan, he was at every stage in his pink Russian hat. Chapeau, sir!

That feeling when you get the first big win for your team in a very long time. Congratulations Pierre Rolland.

Boys will be boys (especially in Italy).

Flags and fun. If you’ve never seen a mountain stage of one of the Grand Tours, I recommend it. Get out and up there.
