For a long weekend in late October, 90 members of the RCC took to the roads of Sonoma County equipped with everything a group of riders could ever need for a weekend of riding – stunning landscapes, challenging climbs, the camaraderie of clubmates, and a couple of fine vintages.
Northern California offers a cornucopia of roads, from the long grind up the (clearly misnamed) Pine Flat to the rolling, winding Highway 1 that hugs the Pacific. Pine Flat hosted the second RCC Hill Climb, with club members putting in 16-minute, 6km-long efforts in their hunt for club-wide bragging rights
Between rides, members enjoyed meals prepared by cycling’s de facto head chef, Biju Thomas, nights at some of Sonoma County’s finest restaurants, and wine pairings from expert sommelier Aldo Sohm. Italy’s Massimo ‘Max’ Testa, doctor and coach to iconic teams such as 7-Eleven, Motorola, Mapei, and BMC, was on hand to answer all questions on riding, training, and racing, and former pros Jan Ullrich and Lucas Euser told their stories of the peloton’s inner workings.
RCC Summits are a focal point of the club’s activities, and over the coming years the RCC will be visiting new places to ride, eat, and explore.
