We first pulled together information about the route and built a catalogue of images and text, looking for details that would lend themselves to a repeat print, without being too cliché or obvious.

  2. Busy man

    True originality in a business like cycling is rare, but Busyman Bicycles’ bespoke leather saddles and bar tapes are really quite something. Based in Melbourne, Busyman has worked with the best, from Firefly to Speedvagen, as well as for hundreds of private clients, with inspirations for his designs including David Bowie, Picasso and Star Wars.

    Being a writer at Rapha can be tricky. After all, they say a picture paints a thousand words. So consider that Ben Ingham has taken something like 50,000 images (that’s before an edit) and has had at least 50 per year published online and in print since 2004. It’s hard to compete. The first Rapha brochure, with a grainy shot of a rider carrying his bike down a stairwell on the cover, contained merely a list of products at the back. The pictures did all the talking. And since then images of this ‘kind’ have had a huge impact on the way the cycling world looks at the sport. These days you can’t move for cycling photographers wrestling over the best angle of a BMC icebox or jockeying to frame Peter Sagan’s rear end.

  4. Birds in flight: building the Rapha + Liberty bikes

    Tom Donhou is an independent frame builder based in Hackney Wick, with a workshop just a stone’s throw from the Olympic velodrome in east London. Building two bespoke bikes, one for road riding and one for the city, Tom painstakingly incorporated the distinctive Rapha + Liberty print into each frame’s paintwork. Evoking the image of starlings in flight, the 1930s print from the Liberty archive is the perfect match for both Tom’s craftsmanship and the bikes themselves. He spoke to Rapha about his experience working on such a unique project.
